Obituary for Shelby Jane Jackson (Whitaker)

JONES COUNTY: Shelby Jane Jackson, 83 of Old Clinton Road, died Friday, February 5, 2021, at a local hospice facility. Graveside services will be held at 2:00pm, Monday, February 8, 2021, at Highview Cemetery with Rev. Randy Darnell officiating.

Mrs. Jackson was born December 24, 1937, in Harlem, Georgia and had lived in Jones County for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Marion and Ida Mae Whitaker. Mrs. Jackson was well known in her community as "Momma Jane." She loved reading to the children at Gray Elementary. She volunteered with MCCG Hospice and was a devoted caregiver for many families. Mrs. Jackson spent hours in the kitchen, cooking for friends and family and contributed many of her special recipes to the Pilot Club Cookbooks. She was once highlighted as a "creative cook" in the Jones County News.

Mrs. Jackson traveled extensively with the Pilot Club, the Young at Hearts and on Mission trips. She was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Gray where she served in the choir for many years and taught the Sara B Sunday School Class.

In her youth Mrs. Jackson was an avid runner and devoted participant in the Relay for Life . She accepted all who passed through her life with love and as an avid Georgia Tech fan, she graciously let the Dawg fans slide.

Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband: Judge George L Jackson and a brother: Clemon Whitaker and is survived by her daughters: Shelby Jordan and Sheryl Gilder Adams; son: Larry P. Jordan, Jr. (Becky); grandchildren: Olivia Jordan and Robert Thomas Gilder, IV (Mandy); beloved great-grandchildren: R. T., Gracie and Maggie; brothers: Louis Whitaker (Sylvia) and Warren Whitaker (Juanita) and a sister: Anne Daley.
