Obituary for Kathryn Baker (Lackey)

Kathryn Baker, 89, of Macon, passed away after an extended illness with family by her side. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 14, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Christ with the Reverend Scott Dickison officiating. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Christ English as a Second Language Program, 511 High Place, Macon, GA 31201 where Kathryn taught Conversational English for many years.

Kathryn grew up in Omega, Georgia in a loving home with 3 sisters and 2 brothers that she dearly loved. She moved to Macon in 1947 to attend Secretarial School at Crandall Junior College and began a career at the Warner Robins Air Force Base where she met and married, Donald Robert Baker of Perryopolis, PA in 1952. They had 3 children, Nancy, Bob and Sandra and in 1961 after the birth of their 3rd child, she decided her time would be better spent devoted to God, home and family. Kathryn still had a thirst for knowledge in the areas of Medicine and Education. She became a Certified Medical Receptionist in 1973 and worked with the Women’s Health Initiative for 6 years. She also became certified to teach Adult Literacy and devoted many years to the Conversational English Program at First Baptist Church. She loved to read and loved gardening in her spare time. Kathryn joined First Baptist Church in 1947 and devoted her life to the church even through her chronic illness with hypertension and renal failure up until 4 weeks before she passed away. She served in many areas of the church for 72 years and became a Deacon at First Baptist in 2004. After the death of her husband in 1979 she spent many years as the Residential Chairman of the American Cancer Society and exceeded her goals every year. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Don Baker, father and mother, Fred and Ethel Lackey, sisters, Tot Lackey and Ruby Gay, brother, Fred Lackey, Jr., daughter, Nancy Shonkwiler, grandson, Andrew Baker and son-in-law, Philip McMahon.

Kathryn will be dearly missed and is survived by her son, Bob Baker (Candy), and daughter, Sandra McMahon, grandchildren: Tim Shonkwiler, Cindy Ryan(Chris), Tiffany Baker, Matthew Baker(Shelley), Malissa Smith, Da-Rae’ Brown(Todd), Alex Windham, Frances Vinson(Patrick), Nicholas McMahon, Sara Logue(Brent) and many great grandchildren.
