Obituary for Fleta Irene Harper (Massengale)

Bradley: Fleta Massengale Harper, 83, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, January 30, 2021. Fleta was born August 23, 1937 to the late Willie Urias Massengale and Nettie Irene Smallwood Massengale in Bradley, Georgia.

She was the longest serving member at Bradley Baptist Church having the distinction of being brought to Bradley Baptist Church in her mother’s womb. Fleta organized the choir for Bradley Baptist and led the choir music for twenty years.

She was a lady of the renaissance style with an intelligent interest that had no bounds. She had a passion for genealogy, history, and especially the civil war and had visited many significant locations of historical interest. Fleta was active in the Jones County History and Heritage Organization and the Jones County Veterans Committee.

Fleta was employed by Georgia Kraft, Georgia Tech and secretary to Superior Judge Jackson, The Department of Family and Children Services and an agent at Child Support Recovery.

Judge Harper was appointed by Governor George Busbee on May 13, 1981 and sworn in as Judge of Small Claims Court of Jones County. Judge Harper became the Chief Magistrate Judge of Jones County on July 1, 1983 and served until April 18, 1986.

Representative Kenneth Birdsong of the 123 district, wrote and passed a resolution in the Georgia House of Representatives, recognizing Fleta Harper’s community leadership and her deep commitment to the welfare of the citizens of Georgia and Jones County. “NOW, THERFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that the members of the body commend Ms. Fleta Harper for her efficient, effective, unselfish, and dedicated public service to the citizens of her community and state and extend to her their most sincere best wishes for continued health and happiness.”

Fleta is preceded in death by her Parents: Willie Urias Massengale, Mother Nettie Irene Smallwood Massengale, Brother: William Lewis Massengale Sr., Survivors include: Niece’s, Barbara (Joseph) Mattera, Orlando FL., Regina Whidby, Macon, Ga., and Nephew, William Lewis (Jeanne) Massengale, Jr., Boynton Beach, FL., and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews.

Services for Ms. Harper will be Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at Bradley Baptist Church at 1:00 P.M., in the original sanctuary with internment in the church cemetery. Dr. Greg Thompson officiating. The Honor Guard on the Jones County Sheriff’s department will serve as pallbearers.
